DESCRIPTION

Every Mochila is a unique piece of art. Each bag has been lovingly handwoven by the indigenous Wayuu women - a nomadic, matriarchal society who inhabit the harsh and desolate desert regions of Colombia. Since the Wayuu were never subjugated by the Spanish, they have managed to stay an ethnically, culturally and linguistically distinct people. These Wayuu women use Mochilas to transport food and water as they journey from camp to camp.

Each Mochila is the personal and artistic signature of the woman who made it. The colorful bags are canvases that reflect the desert world in which these women roam - the patterns of wind on sand, soaring birds of prey, the blazing sun, cactus flowers and rare waterholes. The Wayuu method of weaving is a complex, centuries old, art form done entirely by hand. Consequently, every Mochila takes up to one month to make.

In recent years, their way of life has seriously come under threat from overseas mining interests and has recently been ranked by UNICEF as the second poorest region in Latin America after Haiti. Both economically and spiritually, the weaving of Mochilas provides a means to strengthen Wayuu communities and help them negotiate the complexities of the twenty-first century. We work closely with 60 female artisans from the Epiyau tribe and encourage fair trade practices. By purchasing a Mochila you are directly supporting the Wayuu community and keeping this beautiful art form alive.

RETURNS

If something isn’t right, you can exchange the item within 30 days of receipt by contacting customer service at info@societycollective.com.au. The returned item must be unworn and have all tags attached.
