About
Oceanides was born from a fascination of the marine microscopic world that Designer / Maker Dr Karin Beaumont believes should not be restricted to the eyes of scientists! Raised in South Australia, Karin moved to Tasmania in 1994 to pursue her childhood dream to journey to Antarctica. Inspired by her marine scientific research, Karin draws upon microscopic patterns and forms to create sculptural jewellery and objects that combine an aesthetic of marine fragility and beauty with quiet environmentalism. Jewellery, being a form of personal adornment is also a personal statement about identity. Each piece of jewellery is accompanied by a story about the design, inviting you to be inspired and enlightened by the smaller things in life!
Behind the scenes
Karin says: "All Oceanides products are designed by me and individually hand-crafted, mostly by myself. Where I do outsource some aspects of the making (for processes that require specialised equipment and/or are too big for me to undertake in my home-based workshop), I outsource to other like-minded businesses within Australia. I am increasingly working to design pieces that incorporate natural, recycled and found materials."
